Terranigma (天地創造 The Creation of Heaven and Earth) is a 1995 action role-playing game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System developed by Quintet. It was published by Enix in Japan and by Nintendo in PAL territories for English, German, Spanish and French languages. The game tells the story of the Earth's resurrection by the hands of a boy named Ark, and its progress from the evolution of life to the present day.

Gameplay[]

The game is a top-down action RPG, similar to some of Quintet's previous games. The player can perform different techniques based on his position (running. jumping, or attacking). Enemy projectiles can be blocked with the guard technique, but this technique isn't helpful against melee attacks. Every time an enemy is defeated, experience points are earned. If enough experience points are gathered, the player will level up. Level ups increase stats (HP, strength, defense, luck). Similar to Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia, defeated enemies will drop gems. These gems are used as currency as opposed to their use in the previously mentioned games.

Spells are similar to items in the sense that they are consumable. Magirocks can be collected and exchanged for rings and medals that summon spells. These items break down into magirocks upon use, and these magirocks can be exchanged for spells, restarting the cycle. Upon completing certain objectives (doing a task, defeating a boss, etc.), more types of spells will be unlocked.

Development[]

Terranigma was developed by Quintet. The game was commissioned by Enix, who asked that the title be of the action role-playing genre. This decision was largely due to Quintet's experience with action role-playing games and the good reception of earlier action RPGs such as ActRaiser and Illusion of Gaia. Terranigma's theme of creation was used to sepearate itself from other action titles and to give inspiration to the player concerning the effects that their actions have. Tomoyoshi Miyazaki, the co-founder of Quintet, wrote the script and served as director and designer. The scenario was provided by Reiko Takebayashi. Tatsuo Hashimoto created the cover art as well as rendered some backgrounds within the game. Miyoko Takaoka and Masanori Hikichi composed the music in the game, while Hikichi designed the aformentioned music.

The soundtrack of Terranigma was composed by Miyoko Kobayashi and Masanori Hikichi. The soundtrack, named Tenchi Sōzō: Creative Soundtracks (天地創造 クリエイティヴサウンドトラックス), was released by Kitty Records in Japan, on October 25, 1995.

Despite its many positive reviews, Terranigma sold just 90,000 copies in Japan - several thousand less than Illusion of Gaia. European sales figures are currently unknown.
